Your Health, Our Priority: Navigating PMU with Medical Conditions
Permanent makeup is a powerful tool for enhancing confidence. For many, especially those navigating health challenges that can alter one's appearance, the ability to wake up with perfectly defined brows or lips is not just a convenience—it's a way to reclaim a sense of self and normalcy. However, the artistry of PMU is built upon a foundation of science and safety. The skin is a complex organ, and its ability to heal properly is deeply connected to your overall health.
Because your safety is our absolute, non-negotiable priority, it's crucial to have an open and honest conversation about how certain medical conditions can impact the permanent makeup process. This guide is designed to provide clarity, but it is not a substitute for medical advice. It is a starting point for a responsible and informed discussion between you, your artist, and your doctor.
The Golden Rule: Doctor's Approval is Non-Negotiable
Let's be unequivocally clear: if you have a significant medical condition or are under a doctor's care for any chronic issue, a written note of clearance from your physician is mandatory before we can proceed with any PMU service. A professional artist's job is not only to create beauty but to protect your health. We are not medical professionals and will never override the guidance of your doctor.
A Closer Look at Common Medical Considerations
Here are some of the conditions that require careful consideration and a doctor's consultation before booking a PMU appointment.
Diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2)
The Concern: The primary concerns for individuals with diabetes are a higher risk of infection and a slower, more complicated healing process. High blood sugar levels can impair the body's ability to fight off bacteria and regenerate skin effectively.
The Requirement: Your diabetes must be well-managed and under control. We will require a doctor's note confirming that it is safe for you to undergo a cosmetic tattooing procedure.
Chemotherapy & Radiation
The Concern: Cancer treatments, while life-saving, severely compromise the immune system. This makes the risk of infection from any skin-breaking procedure dangerously high. The skin also becomes incredibly sensitive and may not heal properly.
The Requirement (Timing is Everything):
- Before Treatment: Getting PMU before starting chemotherapy can be a wonderful, proactive step. However, you must have your oncologist's clearance.
- During Treatment: It is an absolute contraindication. We cannot perform any PMU services while you are actively undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.
- After Treatment: You must wait until your treatment course is complete and your blood counts have returned to a safe level. A written clearance from your oncologist is mandatory, and they will advise on the appropriate waiting period (often 6 months or more).
Autoimmune Disorders (Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn's, etc.)
The Concern: Autoimmune disorders can cause the body's immune system to be unpredictable. A PMU procedure could potentially trigger a flare-up. Additionally, some medications used to manage these conditions can suppress the immune system, affecting healing.
The Requirement: We require a doctor's note and confirmation that the condition is not currently in an active flare-up stage.
Blood Clotting Disorders or Use of Blood Thinners (Warfarin, Coumadin, etc.)
The Concern: These conditions and medications prevent blood from clotting normally, which would cause excessive bleeding during the procedure. This is not only a safety concern but also prevents the pigment from implanting properly, leading to poor or non-existent results.
The Requirement: You must have explicit permission from your doctor to safely stop taking your medication for a specific period before and after your appointment. We will not proceed without this documented clearance.
Active Skin Conditions on the Face (Eczema, Psoriasis, Rosacea, Dermatitis)
The Concern: We cannot work on skin that is inflamed, broken, irritated, or compromised. Tattooing over an active flare-up can worsen the condition and lead to very poor healing and pigment retention.
The Requirement: The skin in the direct treatment area must be completely calm and clear at the time of your appointment.
The Importance of Full and Honest Disclosure
Your intake and medical history form is a critical safety document. It is essential that you are 100% honest and thorough when filling it out. Withholding information about a medical condition or medication does not just put your PMU results at risk—it puts your health at risk. This is a partnership, and your honesty is a key part of ensuring a safe and successful outcome.
